Step Brothers

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly each play their own twisted versions of bratty eight year olds trapped bodies of forty year olds, who by some strange twist of fate wind up as step brothers - but not in the traditional Brady Bunch step sibling style.

They are anatomically grown men, but they live at home, have never had a job or had to do anything for themselves. They put George Costanza to shame! Of course it follows that they don’t appreciate the change to their lives that is thrust upon them when they’re parents get hitched.

The pair don’t limit their protagonists’ characteristics to those belonging to immature adults, but somehow manage to consistently act, speak and sound like actual children. Their ability to do so for the entire movie is what makes it consistently far fetched yet enjoyable. They throw vicious and hilarious tantrums and play vengeful and grotesque pranks on each other.

It is possible that the basic idea for the plot derived from a satirical and exaggerated parody of those parents of spoilt kids, who eventually wind up on Dr. Phil when the children are unable to function normally in society. I feel strongly about those type of parents hence I got a little agitated and started thinking to myself “I BLAME THE PARENTS”, then I remembered that it was just a movie (even though it no doubt parallels and spoofs the aforementioned stereotype) and I enjoyed myself.

There is plenty of senseless humour to keep almost any audience entertained and Ferrell and Riley’s crazy antics save an expected lacklustre plot.

Step Brothers is a bizarre and, at times hilariously sickening comedy whose formula is the sum of a constant stream of goofy antics. It makes for an enjoyable and light hearted 95 minutes of thoughtless comedy.
