World-class megastar Rihanna kicked off the Australian leg of her ‘Last Girl On Earth’ Tour on Friday night from Brisbane’s Entertainment Centre.
Unquestionably a global music icon, the songstress’ latest album Loud is fast approaching Double Platinum. It is currently #2 on the ARIA Album Chart and delivered the hit singles “Only Girl” (4 X Platinum), “What’s My Name” (Platinum) and current ARIA #1 Single “S&M” (Double Platinum).
“S&M” is Rihanna’s seventh #1 single in Australia (six solo, one duet with Eminem), which puts her on equal par for #1 singles with Vera Lynn (1940’s), Eddie Fisher (1950’s) and Eminem (2000’s). With “S&M” reclaiming the top spot this week it takes Rihanna’s tally at the top to 33 weeks, now only three weeks shy of Madonna’s 36 accumulated weeks at the top and ahead of Kylie Minogue on 31.
Including her featured single with Eminem “Love the Way You Lie”, Rihanna has had more weeks at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart than any other artist this century.
Throughout her career, Rihanna has sold over 3.6 million units in Australia alone. Every week since July 2010 Rihanna has featured in the top 10 Singles chart, (either with her own single or featuring in a single). In the ARIA Singles chart (14/2/11), Rihanna featured in 6 singles in the top 150 (5 in the top 100). #1 “S&M”, #10 “Who’s That Chic”k (David Guetta Feat. Rihanna), #24 “Only Girl in the World”, #47 “What’s my Name”, #48 “Love the Way you Lie” (Eminem Feat. Rihanna), #133 “Rude Boy”.
In the UK Rihanna record sales have passed the 10 million mark. This milestone has been achieved six years after Mercury Music Group/Def Jam first launched her career in the UK. The label has released each of her five albums, starting with 2005’s Music Of The Sun followed by four multi-platinum albums including the 6x Platinum 2007 release Good Girl Gone Bad.
Rihanna, who is signed to the iDJ Music Group (US), is the only female artist to have a Number 1 hit single in five consecutive years in the UK, and also broke records with the longest running Number 1 in the decade with 2007’s Umbrella, which retained the Number 1 spot for ten consecutive weeks. She went on to top the sales of Umbrella with 2009’s Rudeboy (from the double-platinum Rated R) and then again with 2010’s Platinum Number 1 smash hit Only Girl (In The World). In total she has secured twelve Top 5 singles in the UK.
In 2010 Rihanna was the highest selling singles artist of the year in the UK. Additionally, Rihanna featured on the biggest selling single of the year, Love The Way You Lie, with Eminem.
Since its release in November 2010, her most recent album Loud has already produced two Number 1 singles and topped 1 million album sales over the counter in the UK, making it her fastest-selling album.
