Pez takes out 2009 AIR Award for Best Independent Hip-Hop/Urban Album
22 November 2009
Celebrated Melbourne emcee PEZ has taken out the Best Independent Hip-Hop/Urban Album category at the 2009 AIR Awards, for his acclaimed debut album A Mind Of My Own.
Beating out a tough field including Astronomy Class, Funkoars, Gully Platoon and Hermitude, Pez joins such local hip-hop luminaries as Hilltop Hoods and The Herd as previous AIR winners.
Upon accepting the award, Pez said: “I didn’t wanna prepare a speech because I thought I would look stupid, but I realise now not preparing a speech makes you look stupid!
“Nah, on a serious note, it’s a huge honour to be recognised by the indie music scene, because it’s something that I really believe in and support myself. Much love to everyone who voted.”
Since 2006, the AIR Awards have recognised the best in independent Australian music – specifically those artists who are released through an Australian-owned independent record label AND also distributed through an Australian-owned distribution company.
For Pez, the award is the latest in a string of accolades for A Mind Of My Own and its chartbusting first single ‘The Festival Song’.
‘The Festival Song’:
· No. 7 on Triple J Hottest 100 (2009)
· No. 1 on AIR 100% Indie Singles chart
· No. 11 on ARIA Australian Singles chart
· No. 11 on ARIA Urban Singles chart
· 2 million+ plays on MySpace
· Added to Austereo Hot 30, Nova & JJJ nationally
· iTunes editor’s pick: Best Hip-Hop Track of 2008
A Mind Of My Own:
· No. 4 on AIR 100% Indie albums chart
· No. 14 on ARIA Urban Albums chart
· Nominated for Best Urban Album at 2009 ARIA Awards
