Fast and Furious
In a genre saturated with b-class, substance-less, synonymous hoon films, the Fast and Furious franchise was a cut above the rest and catapulted stars Paul Walker and Vin Diesel to a-list celebrity status thanks to the popularity and success of the series.
However, in the years which have lapsed since 2 Fast 2 Furious, both stars appear to have been unsuccessful in trying to match the success of the previous furious films, and it’s my assumption that the most recent instalment ‘Fast and Furious’ was quickly churned out to cash in on the franchise and make a quick buck. And I mean real quickly, seriously, they couldn’t even come up with an original name and instead simply dropped the ‘thes’ from the first film’s title!
The film failed to grab my attention at all and I can vaguely recall the plot to be something about transporting drugs and Mexico. The stunts were just that little too far over the top and apart from an innovative racing scene involving satellite navigation racing, the entire film lacked creativity and originality. There seemed to be no chemistry between any of the characters, however the script didn’t really give them a chance.
The film lacked everything which made the previous instalments entertaining… a smorgasbord of hotted up cars, a stunning a-list female lead, a loathsome, sleazy villain to hate, humour, a great soundtrack, a shirtless Paul Walker, in fact the only reason I stayed for the duration of the film was Paul Walker’s onscreen presence (for purely shallow reasons)!
