#1 –Obsessed (Remix) – Mariah Carey feat. Gucci Mane
Mariah’s been alternatively praised and demonized by the music press throughout her career, but this confident, mid-tempo track has stirred up both praise and controversy in the first week of its release. Def Jam producer/songwriter The-Dream hinted before the records release that it would ‘light the blogs up’, and now observers are speculating the song is an Eminem diss track! Eminem’s Relapse track ‘Bagpipes from Baghdad’ warns Nick Cannon (Mariah’s husband) to ‘back the f*** up’ and states his intention of getting Mariah back. Mariah’s track supposedly alludes to Eminem’s drug use and is filled with sharp provocations slamming Eminem as a fad and circus sideshow. Apart from the controversy, ‘Obsessed’ is a club-friendly track which should stir up interest for Mariah’s new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, which will also feature production by Timbaland. Bryan-Michael Cox and Jermaine Dupri. The album is due to be released in August.
Timbaland being sued for Nelly Furtado’s “Do It”
Producer extraordinaire Timbaland, known for his sampling of exotic music and use of instrumentals from across the globe, has long been under fire for supposedly ‘plagiarizing’ a Finnish song called ‘Acidjazzed Evening’, for the cool, arcade game-sounding tune “Do It” on Nelly Furtado’s 2006 album Loose. The song, created on the computer of artist Janne Suni in 2000, was re-recorded in 2002 by another musician in the “Commodore 64 SID format”, and it is this re-recording which Timbaland supposedly used without permission. Now, several years after the controversy in 2007, Timbaland and Nelly Furtado are being sued by Finland-based Kernel Records. Other defendants in the lawsuit include Mosley Music Group, Interscope-Geffen-A&M and Universal Music Distribution. Timbaland previously dismissed the claims as “nonsense” while admitting he did not have a way of verifying if the sounds he used were in the public domain when he sampled them. If the suit succeeds, the copyrights will be transferred to the Finnish company and the further release, performance and sale of “Do It” will be prohibited. It looks to be a David-versus-Goliath type battle!
Lil Wayne Unable to Stop Documentary’s Release
Cash Money Records has failed in a bid to stop the release of a documentary titled “The Carter’ created by QD3 Entertainment which allegedly contains ‘private and sensitive’ material of Lil Wayne. The documentary, which has been received very well by critics and at the Sundance Film Festival, contains material of Lil Wayne openly discussing his drug habits, causing mayhem in hotel rooms, and discussing his first sexual experience. Lil Wayne has accused the producer of the documentary, Quincy Jones III, of not keeping his word on giving Lil Wayne a final veto on the film’s content. Lil Wayne has argued that the film’s release will influence the outcome of his court cases. Lil Wayne, who has admitted to smoking marijuana recreationally and once being addicted to codeine cough syrup, has previously been arrested for marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy possession. Lil Wayne’s next album Rebirth will be in the rock genre, and is to be released in August.
Nas and Kelis in Unborn Child Support Beef‘Queen of the Bizarre’ Kelis of “I hate you so much right now!” and “Milkshake” fame has sued Nas for child support….despite the fact the baby has not been born yet! Kelis has demanded US $20,000 a month from Nas, writing in court papers that she has only made US $21,000 a month since November and is having trouble maintaining mortgage payments on two homes in Los Angeles and New York. Kelis has declared (in advance!) that the baby’s monthly bills will include US $3,500 a month for nanny and support staff, despite the fact that the reason Kelis is demanding such an exorbitant sum from Nas is that she hasn’t been working for over a year. Nas has commented on the dispute online: “Right now I’m shouting out to real dads. Some are great role models with real academic achievements. Some are not … We deserve the love!!! We put up with everything, standing true to what’s real and letting life take its course protecting our household, our woman, our children, our family … Biggest Shout To My Son On The Way!!”
