The stages were illuminated with visuals and city skyscrapers, setting the mood for what was regarded as a night not to be missed, with a focus on creating more than just your average Hip Hop show. Venues reached capacity around the country, and the shows received rave reviews! Now it’s time for Rap City’s return to Australia with the “Summer Throwdown”.
Joining us on the 2nd Rap City events is another line up of well established Hip Hop veterans, who will be playing for the first time under one roof. Get ready for a night to remember; a night that will once again showcase some of the finest lyricists, beat makers and DJ’s in the business!!

BLACKALICIOUS
Quannum Record’s own Blackalicious have been dominating the underground scene since the early 90’s. Forming in high school in ’87, the Sacramento based pair have released three full-length albums (1999’s Nia, 2002’s Blazing Arrow and 2005’s The Craft), and have been described as “one of the most popular groups in the independent hip-hop scene”.
Over their career they have collaborated with many of the most respected artists in music including DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Chali 2na, Hi-Tek, Gil Scott-Heron, Dilated Peoples, Ben Harper, George Clinton, Pigeon John, Zach De La Rocha, Saul Williams, fellow label mates Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truth Speaker and more.
The success of their studio albums and memorable live shows has helped them tour the world numerous times, showcasing Gab’s quicksilver, tongue-twisting rhymes and Chief Xcel’s classic beats. Australian audiences have welcomed the tag-team with open arms over their career and punters have packed venues around the country to support one of their favourite Hip Hop duos.
Blackalicious last visited our shores in 2008 when they played the Parklife Festival. As 2010 comes to a close, we feel it’s time for Blackalicious to return down under with those incredible party vibes once again!

MURS & 9TH WONDER
What happens when a dreadlocked, vegan rapper from LA joins forces with one of the most respected producers out of North Carolina? You get the skilful combination of Murs & 9th Wonder. Separately both artists have established themselves as veterans of the scene. Murs gained recognition for nearly a decade of working with various groups in the underground, including 3 Melancholy Gypsies (3MG), Living Legends, and Felt (with Slug of Atmosphere). On the other hand, 9th Wonder’s smooth, soulful production credits read like a who’s who of the industry, having worked with established acts including Little Brother, EPMD, De La Soul, Mary J. Blige, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Drake, Buckshot, Destiny’s Child, Erykah Badu, Ludacris, Jean Grae and plenty more.
Murs is no stranger to Australia. Having sold out shows with his previous solo tours, he has proven that his fan base stretches half way around the world and has consistently dominated the Australian stages with his high energy live shows. However, this is his first time bringing along his partner in crime, 9th Wonder, and the addition will make for an incredible combination. Together they have teamed up for a handful of collaboration albums including “Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition” (2004), “Murray’s Revenge” (2006), “Sweet Lord” (2008) and their latest project “ForNever”. Now it’s time to show Australia what the two can do together on stage.

R.A. THE RUGGED MAN
R.A. the Rugged Man is no stranger to the scene. The Long Island, New York native has been delivering his intense style of lyricism throughout the underground since 1992. Throughout his career he’s worked with various artists including the Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, Sadat X, Chuck D of Public Enemy, Jedi Mind Tricks, Kool G Rap, Wu-Tang Clan, Erick Sermon, Alchemist and more.
The MC, who has alluded to suffering from mental illness, has openly talked about coming from a broken home. His father was a Vietnam veteran affected by Agent Orange, his brother Maxx was born handicapped and blind, eventually dying at the age of 10, while his sister Dee Ann couldn’t walk or speak (She later died in 2007 at the age of 27).
As well as his passion for Hip Hop, RA also used to write a monthly movie column, has written three screenplays with cult horror film director Frank Henenlotter, and also recently signed a book deal that will explore his love of boxing. Last time R.A. the Rugged Man visited our shores he left audiences stunned with his energetic lyricism, and slightly grotesque, yet loveable stage show. It’s time for the big man to return!
