People Under the Stairs – Carried Away
People Under the Stairs – Carried Away
It’s been a while since I had the PUTS on my playlist they kinda fell off my radar after OST (which btw was an awesome album!). Can’t really say why, I’ve always enjoyed their music they’re very much from Jurassic 5 era of hip hop where everybody was trying to bring that old school vibe back to the ever so serious world of hip hop. It’s all about fat beats back and forth raps about partying, drinking beer and smoking weed. Nothing much has changed on this album (Don’t mean that in a bad way) with the usual sampled beats and straight b-boy lyricism. If there is any difference that can be found the beats are slightly more upbeat, the type you would hear at some trendy bar that likes to play old school funk breaks and golden age early 90’s hip hop.
Tracks like ’80 Blocks from Silverdale’ and ‘Trippin’ at the Disco’ are just give off the vibe that Thes and Double K had a serious amount of fun making this album and refuse to be caught up in the posturing of their contemporaries. For those that like the chilled out tracks PUTS are famous for then the title track ‘Carried Way’ will hold you down while ‘Down in LA’ is a nice head nodding ode to their home town which can’t help but leave you with a smile on your face – bring on summer! What you won’t find here is any sort of depth in the lyricism it’s all pretty straight to the point. Take the track ‘Beer’ for example there is no underlying theme or metaphor here it’s just straight lyrics about their love affair with beer. Nothing wrong with that but if you’re looking for something a little deeper then this might not be for you.
