Man on the Moon - Kid Cudi
The man they call Kid Cudi has had promising rise to stardom since his break through single release “Day n nite” that has been every where the last six months from clubs to Ministry of Sound compilations. Cudi’s recent stardom has a lot to do with his massive cross over appeal with audiences around the world with his left field style and flow. More importantly though, in producers’ eyes he is definitely hanging round the right circles. Kanye West was first to notice the hype around Cudi and quickly signed him up to his record label “Good Music” and soon after featured on Kanye’s “808’s and Heartbreak” album featuring vocally and lyrically. Even more recent is his appearance on ‘David Guetta’ new album “One Love” expanding his fan base.
With only one highly acclaimed mixtape under his belt the hype anticipation was immense for his first album. Entitled ‘Man on the Moon: The End Of Day’ the album is arranged like Broadway play only sci-fi style, with tracks separated into five acts telling the story of lonely stoner. “Day N Nite” the first single did so well especially in Australia due to the ‘Crookers’ remix which clearly is the most amped track on the album. The second single “Make Her Say” is another stand out track and was easily the more logical choice for a commercial release, as it samples ‘Lady GaGa’s’ “Poker Face”
The reception of the album has been mostly positive, as it delves into Cudi’s introspective persona. The sound can only be described as spacey and melodic and will definitely take you a few listen to grasp the concept. But each time you do it grows on you more. One thing I would have like to have heard was a change of tone and different attack on some tracks to break it up more. But with guest appearances by Common and MGMT helping the album’s concept, it is by and large a solid effort.
