Letters to Juliet

Starring Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Egan.

I found it hard to review this movie only because it was good and bad, sad and funny, sweet and gag-worthy at the same time.

Seyfried’s performance as an aspiring journalist Sophie, who stumbles across the ultimate love story in Italy is definitely noteworthy. She is able to create some tear jerking moments despite corny lines and text book scenes. Redgrave ofcourse is perfect in her role as the 70 year-old Clare, returning to Italy to find the true love she abandoned 50 years earlier. Sadly, i cant say the same for Egan, who’s performance seemed a little forced and often not convincing.

I did love Clare’s story and was able to journey with her through the picturesque Italian countryside on her search for Lorenzo. Their story makes you believe that true love does not fade with time.

Unfortunately, i cant say the same for Sophie’s and Charlie’s romance, which was just unconvincing. it was pretty obvious that the two were bound to fall in love, but there was no emotion in their story and the cliched scenes did them no favours. I think i almost rolled my eyes at one point at the end.

Overall, I did enjoy the movie and i would still recommend it, only with a warning that the Sophie and Charlie might annoy you from time to time.
