#1 –Whatever You Want- CONSEQUENCE feat KANYE & JOHN LEGEND
Consequence has been less successful than fellow G.O.O.D. Music label mates John Legend & Common, and he infamously offered a refund deal on his Myspace page to any purchasers of his 2007 debut album “Don’t Quit Your Day Job!” who felt disappointed with the album’s material. The album itself received mixed reviews, and Consequence (who is cousins with much acclaimed A Tribe Called Quest member Q-Tip) has certainly not received the critical acclaim given to his mentor Kanye and the other protégés who largely depend largely on Kanye’s stellar production. This track off his second album, Cons TV, due to be released in October 2009, should go someway to silencing the critics. This laid-back track, which thankfully features the more silky urban sound that crafted Kanye’s success, will get the ladies grooving with the addition of the soulful John Legend. It remains to be seen whether the new album will feature similar material, and if Consequence can silence the critics and be another star on G.O.O.D. Music’s roster.
Drake and Lil Wayne Cause Offense with BET Performance
Amidst a star-studded tribute show to the passing of Michael Jackson, (spectacularly pulled off considering Black Entertainment Television had only a few days to transform their 2009 Annual Music Awards into an MJ tribute!), lies some heated controversy! BET has apologized under pressure for a performance by Drake, Lil Wayne and Young Money Records of the songs “Best I Ever Had” and “Every Girl” that featured very underaged, scantily-clad girls (including Lil Wayne’s daughter and friends) dancing up on the stage to sexually explicit lyrics sung by the Young Money crew. Drake has regretted the performance, releasing a statement saying that the ‘climate of the show changed a lot with Mike’s passing’ and that ‘it was a terrible idea that he’ll do to myself again.’ It was a blemish in an otherwise good tribute that featured the testimony of MJ’s sister Janet and a host of other tributes, and was broadcasted on MTV here in Australia. Remarkably, the ratings of the BET Annual Music Awards increased by 61-percent this year, interest being fuelled by the passing of MJ.
The Game Apologizes to 50 Cent and Interscope
One of the most high profile Hiphop beefs of recent years was the media attention-grabbing conflict between The Game and 50Cent. Their relationship coming apart at the seams at the height of The Game’s debut success and the rise of G-Unit, The Game has said in an interview with MTV News that he regrets the conflict and apologizes wholeheartedly for the damage he did to G-Unit and Interscope. Comparing his chemistry with 50Cent to the partnership of Method Man and Redman, The Game stated that “I can say as a man that…if it woulda kept going: endless paper. Millions of albums sold. Because we were great together.” The Game has also announced that Michael Jackson himself attempted to be a peacemaker between himself and 50Cent, offering in a phone call to be the middleman between the two stars and declaring his wish to create a collaboration with both The Game and 50Cent. This track never came to be, but both Fiddy and The Game have released tribute tracks to MJ in the days since his passing.
Scott Storch Wins Grand Theft Auto Legal Battle
The financially troubled hitmaker Scott Storch has won a major legal battle after avoiding a five year prison sentence, with his Grand Theft Auto charges being dismissed. Storch was accused of not returning a 2004 Bentley Flying Spur seven months after the lease has expired. Times have certainly changed for Storch, who was formerly known for his fleet of exotic cars, and never being photographed without being covered from head to toe in bling. What is most surprising is that Forbes, magazine of the financial elite (and those who aspire to the financial elite), estimated that Storch earned over $17 million US in 2007, being one of Hiphop’s most highly paid entertainers. Despite this, a cocaine addiction and a life beyond his means has left Storch destitute. The win in this legal battle should offer some solace to the troubled producer, who is set to earn some cash by making a reality show regarding his comeback to the music industry.
