#1 Freak – Estelle feat Kardinal Offishall
The first lady of U.K soul proves to us that she’s no flash in the pan with her off beat new single Freak featuring Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall. It’s not gonna set the world on fire but it will definitely get your attention as will the cleverly craft video clip that accompanies it. Freak also draws some upbeat inspiration from the Soul II Soul classic Back To Life thanks to producer David go getter Guetta. The new album All Of Me hits the stores later this month.

Finally The Roots new album!
The Roots have announced that they will finally release How I Got Over this June on Def Jam, an album that has been heavily anticipated for quite some time. Originally, the album was meant to be released in 2009 but it was pushed back for various reasons. It seems this release date is set, according to ?uestlove’s Twitter account. More recently, The Roots made headlines when they announced their upcoming Picnic Project and when news surfaced that they would produce John Legend’s next project. The Roots’ How I Got Over to be released June 8th.

Rap legend Guru pulls through.
One of hip hops most influential Emcee’s Guru from 80’s & 90’s groups Gang Starr suffered a massive heart attack last week and was rushed by paramedics to a New York hospital where he remained in a coma for several days aided by a life support machine. The great man weathered the storm and has woken from the coma and although weak, managed to release a statement to his legion of fans via his publicist thanking everyone for their prayers and get well wishes. It is unknown how long he will have to remain in hospital and a planned North American summer tour has be put on hold indefinitely.

R.I.P Chilly B.
Robert “Chilly B” Crafton III, original member of 1980s electro-rap group, Newcleus, died last week after suffering a serious stroke. The rapper and bassist passed away in Brooklyn at the age of 47. Newcleus formed in 1977 in Brooklyn, emerging to introduce a new kind of rap genre, inspired by Afrika Bambaataa’s hit record “Planet Rock.” The group is recognized for integrating electronica music with the newly-developing rap sound. “Chilly was the musician in the group,” co-founder of Newcleus, Ben Cenac told the New York Times. “We were both self-taught, but he had a more seasoned musicianship in his playing. When he played bass, you knew it was him.” One of the group’s biggest hits, “Jam On It” has inspired artists like Game, Mos Def, and Will Smith, all who have sampled the classic Hip Hop record.

A Tribe Called Quest.
A new documentary film will be released that highlights the legacy, influence, and artistic path created by the legendary 90’s Hip Hop group A Tribe Called Quest. Created by notable actor and avid fan of ATCQ, Michael Rapaport, Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest follows the groups lineage through Hip Hop. Rapaport and his team of film producers have documented over 200 hours of footage, including interviews with Mos Def, Pete Rock, Common, Pharrell Williams and many others. The film is currently in its editing stage, with no current release date set. Visit http://www.atribecalledquestmovie.com/ for updates on this project.
