#1 – Make Her Say (Poke Her Face) – Kid Cudi feat Kanye West & Common
I can’t remember there being hype of this magnitude surrounding an artist since Nas burst onto the scene in the early 90’s. The beauty about Cudder is that he’s done it all off his own back independently of any major record label. His debut album Man On The Moon – End Of The Day would have to be the most anticipated release of 2009 and in my opinion, rightly so. The new single Make Her Say is a loose down-tempo parody and play on words of Lady GaGa’s pop smash Poker Face and it features her on backing vocals along with Kanye West & Common. Kanye got the inspiration to produce this from Lady GagGa’s unplugged internet acoustic performance recorded for YouTube from the Cherry Hill Studio’s earlier this year. The Kid is highly original, totally fresh and he makes a welcomed change to the formulated studio fodder that’s dished up to us on a daily basis by the major labels. (GaGa’s not to shabby either!)
Grandmaster Flash honoured.
As one of Hip Hop’s most influential artists, Grandmaster Flash has rightfully been given the recognition he’s deserved for a career that spans from the 1970’s to his latest release The Bridge. Inducted into the Rocj And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007 alongside The Furious Five, Flash will add to his regiment of accolades with the UMA Living Legend Award. The New York deejay will be presented with his award during the Urban Music Awards on July 17th at the Highline Ballroom in Manhattan. Jordan Kensington, founder of the UMA, explained why Flash was the right choice. “Flash is an absolute legend and he remains an inspiration to the Hip Hop culture all together by flying the flag from its inception to the success it has become today”.
Jay-Z to join Warner music Group?
Ever since rapper turned entrepreneur Jay-Z left his position as president of Def Jam the rumor mill has been buzzing regarding what’s next for the Brooklyn native.
But a source revealed to the Ney York’s Daily News this week that a deal with Warner Music Group may be in the works.
If Jay-Z were to join Warner Music Group he would be working alongside Hip Hop business moguls Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles. Jay-Z has allegedly been meeting with Cohen and Liles to discuss his potential future at Warner.
"Jay knows Lyor and Kevin from back when they all worked together at Def Jam, and he obviously wants to work something out with his friends,” the source told the Daily News. “He wants to get the dream team back together. There have been a few whiffs of a reunion in the past, but only now - and very privately - is something finally starting to happen."
There has also been talk of Jay-Z starting his own label at Warner Music Group.
"This is big in Hip Hop,” the source explained. “These are three of the most powerful men in music, who might be working together, and there’s no question the success they’ll have as a team will be huge."
Neither Jay-Z or any representative from Warner Music Group have responded to the claims.
Suge Knight talks on the West Coast.
In an interview with HipHopStan.com, former Death Row Records CEO Marion “Suge” Knight claims he’s “running the west.” Despite an absence from record-making, his several run-ins with the courts removing his stake in Death Row, he says he’s enjoying life, planning to be in some movies, and working on putting out new music. In the interview, he lends some praise to a few up and coming artists: DXnext alums Glasses Malone, Nipsey Hussle and Warner Brothers artist Jay Rock, saying that he’s sure they’ll all do well and even commenting on veteran artists Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy, saying they’ve been putting out good music as of late. Suge goes on to say that he’s got a few artists he’s working with that no one knows about yet, taking things “back to basics,” and that it’ll be a different side to the commercial hip-hop that’s since taken over from the early ‘90s when west coast music was more prominent on the scene. Suge has also started a new label called Blackball Records.
