Jamie Foxx – Intuition
Jamie Foxx – Intuition
Review by Mawunyo Gbogbo
To be honest, after listening to this album the first time, I didn’t want to hear it again. Some of the songs are fine. Others are good lyrically, but would be better if matched with a different melody. Then there are the songs that feel as if they’ve been included on this record because a 30-minute album would not be taken seriously.
‘Intuition’ will take some time to grow on you, if you give it that chance. At first glance, it promises so much. It features a roll call of Hip Hop and R and B’s finest including Lil’ Wayne, T-Pain, Fabolous, T.I. and the international-superstar-in-waiting The Dream.
Timbaland jumps in on the act to add his trademark beats to the engagingly soulful ‘I Don’t Need It.’ Jamie Foxx also collaborates with Ne-Yo on the upbeat ‘She Got Her Own,’ a remix of ‘Miss Independent.’ Another standout track is ‘Weekend Lover.’ And you can expect a few babies to be conceived to the likes of ‘Slow.’
But fast forward to the bonus track ‘Love Brings Change,’ and this tiresome composition does not feel like much of a bonus at all. The song ‘Why,’ however, could have been salvaged with a better beat behind it.
This is Jamie Foxx’s third studio album. His 1994 debut ‘Peep This’ flopped, leaving the path clear for him to forge a stellar career in acting. He starred in his own television show from 1996 – 2001 and won an Oscar in 2005 for his portrayal of the late music legend Ray Charles. But Foxx did not give up on a career in music.
His sophomore release ‘Unpredictable’ topped the charts and also boasts a plethora of guest appearances. The good news is ‘Intuition’ is actually better than ‘Unpredictable.’ Once you get in to it, you can appreciate it for the fact that it is at least different. And it is a truism that often the songs that are not immediately pleasing are the ones that will have the lasting impact – classics have been born that way.
But first impressions cannot be discounted and, at first, this album was almost a chore to listen to. If you don’t mind skipping tracks here and there, ‘Intuition’ may sit comfortably in your collection and will definitely get better each time you blow the dust off it.
