Just two weeks before he makes his way Down Under for a special one-off show in Sydney, one of the most commercially successful rappers of all time, Ja Rule speaks with Groove On about his up coming show, his new music and even the passing of Michael Jackson.

GrooveOn: Good evening! How are you and what you upto at the moment?

Ja Rule: Hey. I’m good. I’m in my office in New York, working on my new album and my new mix tape.

GrooveOn: Can you tell us a bit about your new album?

Ja Rule: Well, I’m working on a lot of new stuff. Its going to be ‘Rule York’ you know, Ja Rule with a twist! It’s going to be something new and different. I’m being a student of the music. I know the Ja Rule fans are going to love it. And the nay-sayers will have nothing to say!

GrooveOn: We are very excited that you are going to be here in Sydney in a few weeks time. What can your fans expect from your show?

Ja Rule: Well, first things first – get your night’s rest and be ready, cos it’s going to be crazy! My shows have a lot of energy. I like to get down with my fans, touch them, let them touch me - It will be high energy and lots of fun. Be ready!

GrooveOn: Any chance we will get to hear some of your new stuff at the show?

Ja Rule: Yes, I mean I will be performing some of my older hits, because I know the fans want to hear them, and they are the hits that made me who I am, But I will give the fans a taste of the new stuff as well.

GrooveOn: You have been to Australia a few times already. What do you like about it?

Ja Rule: Oh Australia is a beautiful country and a great place to relax. I think I have been there twice. Last time I was there, I went to an amusement park. I think I want to go there again.

GrooveOn: You are one of the most successful rappers of all time, winning multiple awards over the years and selling millions of albums. What is the secret to your success??

Ja Rule: Secret.. hmm I don’t know. A lot of hard work goes into what I do. A lot of hard work. But you know, you got to get a little luck along the way too. Everyone needs a bit of luck.

GrooveOn: When would you say you had your lucky break?

Ja Rule: Well… When I met Irv (Irv Gotti); when I got my deal with Def Jam. These little things didn’t have much to do with my talent. It’s about being at the right place at the right time.

GrooveOn: So you think it has something to do with fate?

Ja Rule: Yes, exactly. Got to have a little bit of fate.

GrooveOn: Now, not only are you a successful musician, you have also been in a fair share of movies, have your own company, record label, radio station, clothing company, just to name a few of your ventures. How do you balance being an artist and a businessman?

Ja Rule: Music is my first love. But, see I am a night owl. So during the day, I am generally in my office, like I am now. And at night, from like 7-8pm til about 6-7am I am in my studio working on my music.

GrooveOn: OMG! Does Ja Rule ever sleep?!

Ja Rule: Hehe yeah well I sleep from about 6am – 10am. For about 3 hours a day. That’s all I really need!

GrooveOn: wow that is a crazy schedule! Now, you have worked with some of the most talented musicians in the industry already. Who have you most enjoyed working with?

Ja Rule: Oh, I have enjoyed working with everybody. I have had the luxury of working with great talent, you know. J-Lo was great, and Nas, Mariah, R Kelly, they were all different, but fun to get to work with. It’s great to mix and match styles and creativities. A lot of fun.

GrooveOn: And what new collaborations can we expect in the future?

Ja Rule: Oh, I will have some collaborations coming. I’m doing some Rock, some RnB. I am going to be mixing it up.

GrooveOn: Awesome! When do you anticipate releasing the new album?

Ja Rule: I am thinking of releasing it in October. But I am working on it at the moment. Fans just gota be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day!

GrooveOn:  With all that’s taken place over the last two weeks, I have to ask, what in your opinion, is the impact of Michael Jackson’s death on the music industry?

Ja Rule: You know, Mike changed the world. Even in his death. For that week, and even now, people are still mourning the death. He brought people together, musically and spiritually, that was Mike’s message to the world. His message was about love and healing, and you can see that happened around the world.

GrooveOn: Yes, that is so true! Well, do you have any final words for your fans in Australia before we see you in a few weeks?

Ja Rule: YO YO YO I’LL SEE Y’ALL SOON!!!!!!

Sydney fans will have the opportunity to see the star live in action, only on July 25 at Big Top, Luna Park. Tickets on sale now!
