In Bruges
Two Irish hit-men, veteran Ken (Brendan Gleeson) and newby Ray (Colin Farrell), have been sent on a forced vacation to Bruges, by their hotheaded boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes) to cool off from a job gone wrong in London. The duo are to lay low and be tourists until they receive further instructions from Harry. While Ken finds the medieval town fascinating, Ray is bored and un-amused, until of course, he meets the beautiful Belgian drug peddler Chloe (Clémence Poésy). No more can be said about the plot without revealing too much too soon.
Irish playwright Martin McDonagh takes his well crafted play and creates a cinema experience that is dark, edgy, unique and memorable. I found the casting to be perfect for the sharp and witty script and the interesting story line. The dark humour combined with the brutal reality of the story keeps you engaged until the very end. I found Farrell’s performance refreshingly honest and outstanding. It is no wonder he took home the 2009 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture.
If you missed it at the movies, make sure you watch the DVD. You will not regret it!
