Fired Up

Shawn Colfax (Nicholas D’Agosto) and Nick Brady (Eric Christian Olsen) are the two popular football jocks faced with the ‘unfortunate’ problem of running out of girls in their school to hook up with. So naturally, under the guise of helping out their school’s uncoordinated cheerleading squad, they ditch their boozy, meat headed footy buddies and sign up as male cheerleaders to attend a ‘cheer camp’ filled with 200 limber cheerleaders, pom poms and untapped resources.

Shawn and Nick bring an engaging chemistry to your classic cheerleader movie and interact well with the array of stereotypical good looking teenage characters and bitchy villains.  However what made this film distinctive and seem fresher and funnier than most other cheerleader/jock films was the abundance of unique supporting characters and their hilarious traits which were played so well. I appreciate the rarity of a movie where the writers and producers have put such effort into providing a high quality supporting cast, and in this instance the most notable is Dr Rick (David Walton) who’s egotistic and self righteous demeanour is perfectly hilarious.

Although the plot is totally predictable and follows the cliché boy-likes-seemingly- unattainable-head-cheerleader formula, it’s a movie which knows its brand and tries to make the most of it. What it is, is a light hearted teen comedy filled with a constant stream of one liners, sight gags, crude and clever humour. Even Shawn and Nick’s progressive development of an unexpected but genuine love for cheerleading is funnier than you’d expect.

‘Fired Up’ provides some immediate and laughable entertainment; however its lack of substance makes it unfortunately forgettable and disposable once you’ve left the cinema.
