Eminem - Relapse

Relapse the latest album from the most controversial rapper around ‘Eminem’ has just been released through universal too much acclaim. Some might say the release has been a long time coming, but ‘Eminem’ has done well to bide his time through the ‘50cent’ phenomena which is just starting to fade well and truly. ‘Eminem’ has also battled his own demons through out the five long year of absence, but the dormant emcee is back and better than ever before with his latest project.

Eminem on ‘Relapse’ has unusual ability unlike a vast majority of rappers out there to make you pay attention. His lyrical content and whether it be comical, shocking, crude or all of the above, makes him stand out above the pack. The cunning way ‘Eminem’ delivers has been worth the wait. And he is sure to keep die-hard fans happy, with bang for your buck with a massive twenty tracks.

Relapse is meant to be part of a two part album release and judging from the reaction from his first single ‘We Made You’ which is already a permanent fixture on radio rotation across the globe, his on the right track. The first thing you notice when listening to the album is not the hilarious 90’s social references and witty observations but how ‘Eminem’ is able to show you another side of his life. By delving honestly into the dark days of his post fame life and his personal abuse to subscription drugs and alcoholism. He confronts you with really strong lyrics, which connects you into his warped world and spits them only like he can. And combine his clever and catchy swagger with the infamous hip-hop producer ‘Dr Dre’ and you get the successful formula that will be sure build his reputation as one of the best emcees. Definitely check it out!

A 5 year absence, a pro longed drug problem with prescription drugs due to the untimely death of his best friend DeShaun “Proof” Holton. Marshall Mathers III has left rehab and returned to the studio to finished his long awaited 4th studio album.

With the master mind Dr. Dre behind him Eminem’s “Replase” is not an over produced under delivered album. It is a lyrical master piece with the obvious Eminem & Dre twist.

His entire career, Eminem has been dogged as the ‘king of controversy’, and Slim shady does it again. This album is full of his usually tactics of celebrity humiliation, self degradation and what some people say as the most disturbing imagination in poplar entertainment.

“Relapse” has few cameos other then Dr. Dre and 50 Cent “Crack a Bottle” the album highlights this lyrical masterminds skills. Being able to use his multitude of voices, ranges beats and tempo changes to create a highly enjoyable and free flowing album. However ironically the track titled “Same song Same Dance” awakens to the fact that once you perform the same trick countless of times the sense of surprise slowly dissipates. This is shown in the ending of the album where Eminem plays an old man in rehab trying to sing another x-rated song where he ends up abandoned.

Even though the countless misogynistic and homophobic references that pepper this album are no longer shocking, they are part and parcel of Eminem’s self proclaimed image. It still does not take anything away from his ability, which if anything has gotten sharper. His delivery and depth has improved and shows in tracks like “Medicine Ball” and “Stay wide Awake”. Which sound like theme songs from teen slasher movies?

All in all “Relapse” does what was made to do. Delivering well produced beats to frame his formidable skills as a rapper whilst creating controversy, and plenty of it.
