CHRIS SORBELLO - The new sound of pop…
After months of hype and anticipation, her first single ‘So Lonely’, produced by Sam Littlemore, is finally on the airwaves, and yes, it is everything we expect and more. And it is refreshing to learn that Ms Sorbello is just and fascinating in person as is her voice on the airwaves.
Sitting in a crowded cafe in sunny Sydney, just before the release of her new album, we had a candid chat about the road that’s lead her to where she is and the glorious future ahead of her.
Bright eyed and full of energy, she speaks of her love for music and her passion for performance as would a child talking about their favourite Christmas present. It is plain to see that Chris is not another young hopeful trying to get famous. Born and raised in Brisbane, Chris left her family and friends and moved to Sydney to pursue her dream, which began at the age of five, after watching an episode of Young Talent Time.
Chris speaks of her passion for chasing her dreams and making the most of life with a level of maturity that seems to exceed her years. This drive and enthusiasm translates clearly in her performances, that show that Chris Sorbello is far more than a stylish beauty with an amazing voice. She is a performer in every sense of the word. The young diva explains that she likes to take “a holistic approach” to her shows, that encompass both an audio and visual experience that is unforgettable. I question her about rumours that the majority of her new debut album was completed within 3 months, a remarkable feat for even the most experienced of artists, and she just smiles and agrees, and it is plain to see that she was born to do this.
If you listen to some of her tracks, it becomes quite apparent that lyrics are an integral part of her music. She takes a very hands on approach to song writing, as she does with each and every performance. She explains that she wants to say something with her music and is very involved in the creative process.
Chris now works closely with David Musumeci and Anthony Agizzi (DNA Songs), and smiles as she says that it is through this collaboration that she “found her sound”. And what a sound it is! The perfect blend of the soothing old school with a cutting edge freshness, it is almost hypnotic. ‘So Lonely’ and ‘Dangerzone’ are my favourites so far, with the sultry sounds and catchy beats that are unforgettable. It is electropop at its best.
Chris’ collaborations are second to none. Her stage shows are choreographed by Ramon Baynes and Marko Panzic, dance royalty who work with only the best performers out there, including Britney Spears and Beyonce. The video for ‘So Lonely’ is produced by James Littlemore.
Having seen her showcase performance, it is no surprise that Chris is being compared with the likes of Lady Gaga. She leaves no stone unturned when it comes to performance, with costumes, lighting, dancers and choreography that are all top notch. You instantly feel like you are watching a veteran on stage and it is surprising to think that this is just the start for the young diva.
Chris is a true perfectionist when it comes to her art and is easily the “triple threat” that she is so often labelled these days. She is every bit a singer, song writer, dancer and actress, with a style, look and sound that is so right now.
Chris Sorbello is infectious and heads are turning. Along with the release of her first single, Chris has already been licensed to the Ministry of Sounds label and has been been announced as support act for the Supafest Tour 2010, featuring Jay Sean, Akon, Kelly Rowland, Sean Paul and Pittbull, just to name a few. So watch this space, for Chris Sorbello is a force to be reckoned with, and yes, this is only the beginning.
