AK dont get me wrong - technically there are so many djes better than her, than me, than lots of us, that dont get gigs...Just as there are talented vocallists who dont mine but dont have the commercial success of Britney or dare I say Pussycat dolls. So long as Pussycat dolls dont proclaim themselves the next aretha franlkin (or Mariah Carey for that matter) then all power to them for making it using their talents...(evemn if its notr sings - they are making money having fun miming, cavorting in precious little and have their studio reps produce fun accessible tunes)
Lets take you for example....You are a true student of the art (well done too...) but you are also a fair amount of eye candy....You may make it on both counts but if you were discovered and asked to glam it up dance in front of a stage (or to to a seductive photo shoot for some promo material) dont tell me you wouldnt do it (If I was managing you I would definitely trade on both your DJ skills and your exotic good looks) and if the looks made you a mllionaire and made me 10% and got me a box of you know what
- make no mistake I’d go there....
Havana is a well produced well managed well marketed and highly successful product. She fully knows her strengths and weeknesses and trades heavily on her strengths. Even Mariah and George Michael wont be photographed on certain sides of their face. Even Janet and MJ mimed and put show over musical credibility. They both knew they couldnt hold a tune an moonwalk at the same time
If Havana started disrespecting other djes verbally or claiming to be the best mixologist or whatever then i’d raise eyebrows. Nino Brown calls himself the Godfather of Funk, and then there is Australia no.1 Party rocker (my apologies the name genuinely escapes me...)..All of these claims could be argued for and against (I could get very offended by the Godfather thingo - i’ve been djing longer than Nino has and probably have a deeper musical knowledge). But none of this is personally directed and we’re all trying to make a living in a very incestuous and cut throat industry. If the Godfather tag or the Diva on the decks or No.1 female rnb dj gets the gigs the well done....And Havana has succeeded in this environment by simply learning how to dj (not as well as some) and trading on her fantastic presence - and i dont think she’s slagged off too many people to get there.
