Freestyle, if you have your whole set planned out and the crowd isnt responding to what your playing you’re goin to have to change it up! so i think freestyle is best but in saying that, a DJ must know their music to know what to give the crowd and how to deliver it.

Freestyle.

I have a few tracks I sequence together as my signatures. I also come up with lists of possible tracks from time to time so I stay in theme - This is more a reference point than a set list to be honest.

Got to be honest here, first few sets i ever did in a club I planned only cos I had only been djing for about 6 months at the time and was freaking out! it was lucky that the songs that I had set worked at the club on that night but If a dj plans there sets every time i think is ridiculous ur not a dj almost anyone could do that. I wont mention names but there has been a time or 2 i have asked a particular dj for a request and they couldnt play it cos it wasnt in “their set” they didnt say this ofcourse but u could tell. Its so much easier when u been doing it for a while tho and u just automatically kno wat songs go & where they are.

Freestyling as a DJ is part of being a DJ, its the artform..
If you want to just do nothing but plan a whole set, the club might as well just get a
Jukebox and program the songs lol

DJz startin off for sure have to program their set!
so they get the feel of playing to a club crowd, using a club system etc etc.. that can get u nervous as hell.. so to have a plan is the best way coz you dont want to get caught out having no clue what to play next and have ur previous track run out!
All because your nervous as shit.
Once your comfortable, go nutz and play around with ur ideas!!
When i started i didnt have a set workd out but had a notepad with ALL my Tracks BPM counted and went from there so i knew what was at the same or similar speed! lol.. Thing i learnt was it doesnt always matter about BPM’s but also the ENERGY of a track! found out the hard way wink lol

-
i know of one dj who plans there sets and she is a sheeeeeee lol we all know who she is
-
i remember i dropped 2 tracks before her and she just dropped em 15mins lata again bc the piece of paper said so
-
back in the day i dont think up and coming djs even planned there sets, i guess times have changed
-
if djs who have being djin for more then 5 years still read from a piece of paper should just quit, if u cant read the crowd then go work at coles

freestyle, i remember my first ever set I planned it all out (was opening set) so hoping it will be quiet, but holy crap the place was bangin already lol!! after about the 4th song i just gave up on the list and just went with the flow!! mixing wasnt perfectly spot on but hey! they crowd loved it so thats all I care about…

having learnt what I know now, i dont know why i ever thought I could plan a set beforehand haha!!

A few up and comers these days dont plan their shit either....... but it shows! lol

Also its funny when you have a certain mix worked out and another DJ copies it at another gig!
I’ve heard it happen on the same night!!! lol

most important skill to have as a dj is to be able to read the crowd
-
u never know how the experts in the crowd are gonna react so planning ur set does not work
-
a piece of paper with ur set on it isnt gonna help u at all
-
just shows ur useless
-
lol klasik i think they should put that piece of paper somewhere else lol
