I was always brought up to believe that you dont need the middle man.
The Church is one thing; faith is another. The fact that there are so many denominations and institutions that worship the same God, only differing on points that have been translated and interpreted by man, suggests that it doesn’t really matter which Church you’re part of. I think there are positive doctrines that can be borrowed from any number of religions and that can contribute to living your life as a good person, and these have devised by man, so it’s not all bad.
I agree, the actions of a minority have had a devastating effect on the majority of the priesthood who have genuine faith and well placed intentions. As with many institutions, those in power in the Church, the highly ranked decision makers, are where the real power and corruption lies, and that has little to do with the lowly parish priest.
Agreed. My parents always taught us to go to Church if we wanted to build on our faith there but they always emphasised that simply being there didn’t do that for us nor did it make us better people.
I don’t deny the likes of Mother Theresa that are/were out there continuously delivering acts of kindness under all sorts of conditions and I strongly admire their efforts. I’ve just gotten to a point now where I can’t digest the audacity, incongruity and arrogance that each of these controversies bring anymore. The latest being the ongoing sexual abuse of impaired adults and the Pope’s comments on just about everything further adding insult to injury. It’s taken til just NOW for them to consider excommunicating offenders for committing this particular type of abuse.
