What are peoples thoughts on this.
As a smoker, i have no issue with the increase, i choose to smoke & am aware of the health risk, we as smokers hamper our health & congest the health system.
I’ve been OS for the last 4 months in countries were smokes are around $3aud a pack & my smoking increased dramatically.
Is this 25% increase too much though? Is this blatant money generating under the guise of helping people quit?
This increase has seriously made me consider quitting, maybe i’ll do heroine instead lol. Even though i have disposable income to spend on ciggies i do the math & the satisfaction just isn’t worth it.
However with the majority of smokers being in the lower socio economic community, what will this lead to?
I may be generalising but i doubt they will quit, if anything they will take up methods similar to drug addicts to get there fix, such as theft.
the black market will also thrive with smuggled smokes coming in.

Another thing, does anyone know if taxes are placed on products such as Niccorette &/or if they too are subject to the tax increase. Also if the government is so keen on people quitting why don’t they (or should they) subsidise these products &/or quit rehabilitation services.

Discuss?

If cocaine was legallised would it reduce the price per gram and would its usage increase? I’m speculating but the underground coke community numbers wouldn’t come anywhere close to the the legitimate ciggies community and I reckon a lot more people are dying from smoking anmd related illness as opposed to say coke abuse (probably purely based on the nuimber of smokers vs cokies)

I dont have a point here...but the $$$ have got to have a big impact with the govts treatment of ciggies....

The government arent doing it to look out for ppls health, it’s money grabbing pure and simple. If they were so concerned about ppl dying they’d make it illegal rather than just increasing the price. But the vested interests are too strong to do that.

Riding a bike without a helmet or not wearing a seatbelt is against the law, so why not make smoking illegal? Cos of the $$$…

Yep Jonny - those with a lower SES are more likely to be smokers - http://www.tobaccoinaustralia.org.au/chapter-1-prevalence/1-7-trends-in-the-prevalence-of-smoking-by-socioec

However, they are also apparently more likely to respond to an increase in cigarette prices by cutting back… http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/309/6959/923

K Rudd and John Brumby need to go.

Im sick and tired of this shit.

Im a non smoker who has never smoked in his life and i am on the sides of smokers on this topic.

Jon Faine full on pounded Brumby on this topic...he said how come the government is committed to the health of people by banning smoking around shopping centres, clubs etc and yet the mahogony room in the casino is still smoking and Brumby said that the casino has a percentage of high rollers and to ensure melbourne continues to keep its international status. So jon faine was calling Brumby on the double standards.
