For this edition of RockSteady! Canberra’s regular reggae music & culture event, we focus on DUB POETRY.
What is Dub Poetry?
Dub poetry is a form of performance poetry of West Indian origin, which evolved out of dub music consisting of spoken word over reggae rhythms in Jamaica in the 1970s. The Dub Poet’s performance is normally prepared, generally performing without backing music, delivering chanted speech with pronounced rhythmic accentuation and dramatic stylization of gesture. Sometimes dub music effects, e.g. echo, reverb, are dubbed spontaneously by a poet into live versions of a poem. Many Dub Poets also employ call and response devices to engage audiences. Dub poetry is mostly of an overtly political and social nature, with none of the braggadocio often associated with the hiphop/dancehall.

We are opening up the floor to all who have something to say. So get up on the mic, get political or straight up busy whilst tuned in to the finest Roots, Reggae, Dub & Ska from residents Jayo & HieronymusIX with Matt Sykes (Dub Dub Goose) on live drums & percussion.
As always, for those of you who like to convert food into nutrient, there will be a Tasty™ Jamaican Jerk Chicken/Fish BBQ provided by Kath & Crew.
Our aim for this edition is to showcase a different side of reggae culture, so spread the word and get involved!
