Australia female dj vs male dj - bookings, image, contacts, image and controversy

Going through past threads on the whole “female dj” and “image vs skill etc” I thought it would be good to perhaps start a tread relating to how do male djs feel with teh advent of female djs coming out in numbers now.

1. Who would you rate as the number 1 female dj in AUS
2. To the male djs- do you feel sidelined at times when promoters go with female djs instead to draw crowds.
3. Have any male djs gone battle to battle with a female dj and how do you rate her?
4. The whole image/style/sex appeal issue - how do female djs feel about that being used against you?
5. Some djs may have managers who may have contact within the industry and this affords them the opportunity to get “deals” for big concerts, parties , campaigns etc. How do the regular club dj feel about this?
6. Have any of you had a personal experience with a certain dj /manager in this industry that left you feeling cheated?

It would be nice to get the channel flowing with discussions pertaining to this issue

And lastly......

whats your
fav female dj and male dj
worst female dj and male dj

1. Who would you rate as the number 1 female dj in AUS? havent bothered thinking about it
2. To the male djs- do you feel sidelined at times when promoters go with female djs instead to draw crowds. nope - there’s plent yof jobs out there, and if a promoter is willing to use the “female dj” tag i wouldnt want to play for them anyway
3. Have any male djs gone battle to battle with a female dj and how do you rate her? nope
4. The whole image/style/sex appeal issue - how do female djs feel about that being used against you? N/A
5. Some djs may have managers who may have contact within the industry and this affords them the opportunity to get “deals” for big concerts, parties , campaigns etc. How do the regular club dj feel about this? This happens for both male and female DJs, and good on them. Nothing’s stopping anyone, with any level of skills, from doing the same. This industry is as much about networking as it is ability and anyone in the industry who thinks otherwise has a lot to learn
6. Have any of you had a personal experience with a certain dj /manager in this industry that left you feeling cheated? Not really

It would be nice to get the channel flowing with discussions pertaining to this issue

And lastly......

whats your
fav female dj and male dj

1. Who would you rate as the number 1 female dj in AUS...aah i would say pretty much most of the female djs from sydney bc
-
1: they have the skill
2: during there set they dont read from a piece of paper
3: they dont jump up and down and start doing dance routines
4: bc they dont hand in fucken pictures of them modeling to get gigs..mad respect to them
-
2. To the male djs- do you feel sidelined at times when promoters go with female djs instead to draw crowds.
-
it just goes to show how stupid some promoters are and why there nights dont last long
-
3. Have any male djs gone battle to battle with a female dj and how do you rate her?
-

-
4. The whole image/style/sex appeal issue - how do female djs feel about that being used against you?

wow yeah true you do have some valid points…

“2: during there set they dont read from a piece of paper ,3: they dont jump up and down and start doing dance routines”
i never really quite understood why she does thta? It certainly is a first and I think it sends out the wrong message to up-and-coming djs nowadays. But hey if its working for her , who are we to judge right???

Regarding the trust issue...a few mate sof mine have been stabbed in the back and i completely agree..heck even in the promo aspect of it we get sharks.

Did find the thread AK wrote and yes big massive respect to her.
I guess every female dj to her own style right? But rumor has it Havana will be doing Kelly Clarkson too. SO i guess she has the industry on lock tight whe it comes o big gigs.

Regarding manager...my motto..if you want something done right do it yourself.

And I hope ppl dnt see this as a hate on havana thread. No not at all...just dont particularly like the aggression her manager dishes out. Makes me think if this is what she wants or the big label behind her. I know a mate in Singapore who tried ot book her but negotiations were hectic.

1. Havana Brown.
2. Yes, cause i’m just as sexy possibly even sexier.
3. Yes I have, but it was a gig in a different genre of music.
4. N/A, i’m not female.
5. N/A, it depends on how ‘hungry’ the DJ is!
6. Yep, DJ Whoo Kid - impact DJs suck in clubs but put them on at a concert and they’ll shine.

they read from a piece of paper bc they are hopeless at reading the crowd infront of them
-
some of these djs just repeat tracks other djs have played before them bc its all a planned set
-
garbage
-
as klasik said, when it comes to skillz being a club dj then she has none wat so ever but that same skill isnt required when ur playing at some concert bc no there gives a shit

1. Who would you rate as the number 1 female dj in AUS

Based on measurable commercial success - Havana Brown - Based on Technique DJ D

2. To the male djs- do you feel sidelined at times when promoters go with female djs instead to draw crowds.

Not at all - its a business - promoters are ultimately in the biz to make a dollar (even the so called credible ones) - You could substitute the word female for younger, better, more popular etc… then end result is the same - i lose gigs to others from time to time and have arguably taken gigs from others who would feel more worthy.

3. Have any male djs gone battle to battle with a female dj and how do you rate her?

Cant remember a head to head battle but i’d love to play next to DJ D, Havana, AK - All good in their own right and it would be fun

4. The whole image/style/sex appeal issue - how do female djs feel about that being used against you?

No idea - ask them

5. Some djs may have managers who may have contact within the industry and this affords them the opportunity to get “deals” for big concerts, parties , campaigns etc. How do the regular club dj feel about this?

All power to them - If I had a manager and he got me a gig opposite Britney or Jay Z or anyone famous I’d be stoked

6. Have any of you had a personal experience with a certain dj /manager in this industry that left you feeling cheated?

Never p- cant say the same for some promoters - but I digress.......

It would be nice to get the channel flowing with discussions pertaining to this issue

And lastly......

whats your
fav female dj and male dj - too many to name
worst female dj and male dj - cant think of anyone i hate with a passion enough to deem them worst

@B-love...thank you for that detailed answer and you do have some valid points. It true most people in that situation would take the latter option and take the quicker route.

@xecutioner I do understand where you are coming from as I have had a few good friends who have either played with them or know of djs who have done such stuff

Its sad how this industry has morphed over the years, Despite what is said even though WE KNOW skills takes preference over anything and everything sadly the public and the promoters buy into an image. Even record labels these days are handing deals to less talented people but coz they are marketable then they win hands down. What message are we sending to the youth?

The future?Who knows. It could get worse with even more"girls" coming out wanting to be hot djs...not realizing the skill, dedication and passion put into it.

Also interesting to note that the going booking fee rate for these “top” djs is ridiculous when come to think of it all you are paying for is the image! Ive head that a quote for Havana was really high!

Lets hope in time the scene changes and we can only bet that this wont take anotehr 50 years to materialize!

I forgot bout DJ D - she’s definitely the best i’ve seen/heard live.

Would it be safe to say that Havana Brown, despite her foibles, has redefined what it is to be a DJ at a concert? Gone is the faceless entity who just plays the songs leading up to and in between the support acts. Thanks to Havana, the DJ has become the support act, with a role in actually putting on a show and entertaining the crowd. Whilst very few other DJs will get up and dance in front of the booth and take photos etc, it’s no longer going to be enough to get up and play a few tracks to amuse the crowd.

i dont think that started with havana brown when it comes to djing at concerts
-
think ken walker, he was there way before her doing the same thing
-
i dont its just sad that promoters are willing to book someone like her over someone who can rock the crowd
-
and before u say anything i have never seen a crowd react to her djing apart from walking of the dance floor which is why its good that shes doing something else and not club djing bc really thats not for her
