So like… the music at Meche sucked hairy sweaty ass on Saturday. No offence to the DJ. Am sure he is very talented and all that… but I mean shit. If I wanted top 40 BULLSHIT or doosh doosh fuckery then I would go to ICBM or Moose.
We actually left because turning up to an RnB Club and hearing dance music kinda kills the vibe - no matter how much alcohol you’ve had.
WHY DOES OUR SCENE SUCK SO BAD!?
Friday nights are meant to be going hard at North and thats cool and all (congrats guys)… but I don’t want JUST Ol’ School. Minque went to shit… no one turns up to the Holy Grail gigs… I mean FFS. I enjoy Meche (normally) but this past weekend was a joke.
Also, if I want to listen to something a little bit more hardcore. I can’t. If I want to chill somewhere on a Thursday for some good music and a drink after work. I can’t.
So what’s a girl to do if she wants to listen to some Hip Hop in Canberra? *sigh*… I’m guessing move lol.
Blame the crowd, not the venue/DJ. If there’s no crowd for it, then no one will turn up. If no one turns up, then no money is made. If no money is made....
Last saturday night was the first time i went out in Canberra since January, and it wasn’t to any rnb clubs.
I have respect for some of the Canberra DJs. I know they know their music, and i know they wanna drop some of those hits, but you can’t please everyone.
Beba, start your own night- you know enough peeps to get some interstate guests and local dj talent- get peeps to get the bed socks off and go out!
They won’t go out because they think there are shit nights...if you start with a good rep, pppl will come.
Actually, that’s a better way of putting it. If someone gave you the opportunity to run your own night however you wanted, the only catch is that you’d have to put up your own money, would you be willing to? I know i certainly wouldn’t.
Firstly let me start by saying all the DJ’s whom I have respect for - know it… as if my two cents counts anyway haha.
Secondly, is the crowd not a product of what the venue, promoters and DJ’s put out there? Perhaps my age works against me here but I remember the time they schooled us. There was no internet to check out the latest tracks and we turned to the club/DJ to showcase what was hot. How do the crowd know what they want when they’re given the same shit over and over again? Then people wonder why a spot loses its heat.
Also, I get your point about making money but if club owners really want to make a buck I suggest they conduct some market research and cater to what is a MASSIVE gap in Canberra nightlife. Take RnB Heat… why is it a success? Because it successfully fills the the gap on a Public Holiday. Saying to me “Top 40 is what the public wants” is a total cop out. That actually translates to “The last thing I tried didnt work so I’ll just give in and do what’s a sure thing”.
In terms of doing my own night/thing and would I or wouldnt I - I don’t have the funds (or time) to do it like I think it needs to be done. I’m not telling what that is though because you never know, one day I might!! Lol.
U would be good at it beba! And its been like this in Canberra for years- it goes through phases. But I assume this is a bit of a down moment...if someone does pick it up and create a must-go-to hot night...they could clean up
ok beba and i have already talked about this subject but i will comment here as well.
.
firstly the dance clubs are now playing RnB songs and getting the same response as RnB djs playing dance music, if u r looking to blame some1 blame timbaland,JT, Pitbull, Akon, David Guetta, rhianna, dizzy rascal, crookers and bob sinclair (there are more but this is probably the main 1s), as they all started making RnB songs with dance beats or dance songs with RnB artists. i dont not mind some or a lot of these song but some ppl hate them, but if u r looking to find a reason clubs are going the way they are then this would be a good start, RnB/ Hip hop has been in a major lul ever since artists started releasing a album or more a year, just 8 - 10 yrs ago there was about a 3 yr gap between records and they spent time making songs that will always be classics, now it seems that artists make songs to be smash hits for 6 months then never be played again.
.
i know that its the Djs responsability to educate the crowd but its also our responsability to play what the majority of the crowd wants to hear, that is not always what we want to play but we are paid employees as well. its sad that the older we get the less the clubbing and music appeals to us in the majority of venues but what we are complaining about now ppl 10 yrs older than us were saying about the way RnB was going when we started clubbing and requesting what we call classics. and in 10 yrs time the 18 yr olds of now will be saying the same thing about now and how the music was better and clubs were differant and how there are no good clubs left to go to.
.
i know how annoying it is when a older person says back in my day but it seems we are all likely to do it 1 day as we get older and start complaining more.
.
i will clear something up tho, North is not only old skool, it is influenced by old skool but as the night gets on the music gets more current, but still generally has a more RnB feel and less hip hip and top 40.

Adz
Adz I get what you’re saying - but what disturbs me is that other cities dont have these issues. There is no love for the music here. It’s all about money and what’s “in”. PISSES ME OFF! Lol.
Sure age is a contributing factor but I don’t feel its that much of an issue. I just have to accept that Canberra will never be able to give me what I want. Its focus is elsewhere in every way.
