i grew up in an area where so called “respect” was your everything. “respect” covers a lot of gray when someone’s set their mind to being violent. this shit starts well before they become violent though, like pre-language, pre-walking, so how do you prevent or fix that?
Well one would suggest that if it’s pre-language and pre-walking, then it’s a) a genetic deficiency (research has shown that that’s unlikely) or b) the influence of environmental and structural issues, which at the pre-language and pre-walking stage is THE FAMILY.
Human behaviour is learnt.... definitions of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour are learnt when our behaviours are denounced or have consequences throughout our lives, not just when we hit our late teens or twenties. The people displaying antisocial behaviour now must have been brought up in a society where violence, excessive consumption of alcohol and so forth were either encouraged or accepted. And i think if you look at the picture it’s not hard to see.
Those causing the bulk of trouble at the moment would be aged 18 - 25? Born in the late 80s - early 90s?
So their parents would have been teens in the late 70s early 80s? - generally speaking an era of increasing materialism and commercialism; the growth in the corporate mentality of every man for himself; the decline of traditional values such as the nuclear family; the prominence of alcohol in Australian culture… advertising at the football, etc; an increased dependence on welfare. That generation have passed on these experiences to their kids and we’re starting to see the results…
This is pure theorising on my part by the way hehe. How do we fix it? Fuck knows lol
Hopefully the generation of CostCo will ensure we are in good stead for the future.
