I’ve been using Reason and Recycle for a coupla years as a production tool, but realsie that most decent sounding instruments come by way of vst plugins, which Reason doesn’t support.
Does anyone have any tips for what to use to make my own beats… Pro Tools? Ableton? Fruity Loops?
I want something that has a good bank of sounds to start with, then i’ll go adding more as i become familiar with the programs…
back when i started making my own beats i started using fruity loops but then i came across a few pluging for cool edit 1.2 which where alot better for me

but yeh fruity loops is good and much easier to use then pro tools or ableton

u should try all the Steinberg tools which has programs like cuebase which is right up there with pro tools
I’ve also read about other DAWs such as Orion and Sonar.
Opinions from anybody that’s used any of these progs to produce soul/hiphop beats, esp about which of these progs suit these styles the best, would be appreciated. I’ll be using it for both sampling, so would like the ability to do some beatslicing, as well as some composition over the samples....
Also just realised that Acid has VST support too, and i already have that, jsut didnt realise the extent of its capabilities. Anyone used it for production before?
Reason can get some good sounds .. you just gotta get the right sounds/refills .. I’ve collected about 30 odd Gigs of em so far (refills/percussions/drums almost all kinds of sounds) Also, VSTi wise, Native Instruments make some reeaalllyy good ones, I used to just load em up with ProTools in an instrument track alongside reason oh Rewire. As the new PT8 has Midi notes just like any other midi sequencer, using VSTi’s should be a lot easier.
Haven’t really bothered with VSTi’s and PT8 since I purchased the Motif XS7 (OOhhhh YyyyeeeAAhhhh *duff man*)
Dude just read up on the XS7… that looks like one powerful fucking machine!
So if i rewired Acid to Reason, i’d be good to go yeh? I could just load the VSTi’s into Acid and still be able to access the refills in Reason? This shit confuses the hell outta me.
that is correct you can use the midi in Acid *assuming it does* with the VSTi(s) and Reason will run parallel just make sure the tempo is set and off you go :D
as for the motif, its everything you read about .. plus more .. i’ve still got 2 DVDs to watch and master it. Although, i’ve been making some real cool shit on it. Its like .. just wow man, the sounds are just amazing. And making beats with that + my Dre Beats headphones = Bliss :D
Nyd,
Check out this forum - http://www.futureproducers.com/forums/ - there’s a wealth of information on there, it’s very helpful. The “Getting Started” and “Tutorials” forums are really helpful.
I’d recommend reading up on the different functions of sequencers, samplers, how midi works and so forth. I found i learnt the most by buying a small cheap midi controller keyboard (you can get a small low end M-Audio for around $200) and experimenting with Reason, whilst reading up on stuff.
to get started with Reason you can even use your onboard sound on your computer, just need a Midi controller which can be as little as $99

When i started out on reason though, I used to draw out my midi patterns.. dear GOD that was sooo haardd but believe it or not I produced this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18PZLe9_jJE entirely by drawing midi’s with the pen tool. every lil bit of it
