Personally, whilst i think the mother is to blame in this 14 y.o rape debacle, i also think the backlash against Kyle and Jackie-O is warranted for neglecting their sense of social responsibility and taking advantage of the impressionability of young listeners and providing them with the opportunity to participate in such stunts.

Whilst no-one held a gun to the head of the participants and forced them to get involved, if broadcasters weren’t so liberal with their definitions of acceptable broadcasting, the opportunity for tis sort of thing would never have occurred.

Initially I jumped straight to the defense of the hosts, saying that it wasnt their fault and that they didnt know that the girl had been raped. But in hindsight, why the hell didnt they know? This kid was 14! a) they shouldnt be asking such questions of a 14 year old b) they did so with the mother’s consent and encouragement, but should still have covered all bases when talking about what could be a touchy subject. Shock jocks or not, if you’re dealing with kids you have a responsibility and they neglected that.

Even more frustrating is the fact that it is only because of the backlash in the community that Idol or the station are doing anything about it, and making cosmetic claims that they are reviewing their policies. Pigs arse.

In my job, if I pushed a kid’s buttons and forced such a disclosure in a private setting, my ass would be on the line. These guys did it on national radio. And still people take their side?

Whilst i agree Kyle is a complete Twat, what also pisses me off is the radio station & the idea that asking a 14 year old girl if she has had sex or not is ok.
Im no fuddy duddy old man like bobby love & im saying that.
Im sure we can all agree that todays youth is living in a overly sexualized world, at the age of 14 they should be learning about what sex is not asked on NATIONAL radio if they have done it....let alone by there mother...let alone whilst conducting a lie detector test.

I honestly think there is only one person to blame in this and thats the kids mother - seriously, what kind of mother does that?
Whilst I recognise that the entire segment was in bad taste and kyle’s reaction to the kids outburst showed ridiculously bad judgement, i can’t help but think it doesn’t warrant them losing their careers.

I can’t believe how many people are overlooking the fact that this childs mother brought her on the show knowing what she had been through. Yet as a society, we choose to crucify a pair of radio hosts rather than the person who should really be held responsible for her own child’s health and wellbeing.

have you seen “pump up the volume”? this is what this reminds me of..

kyle (and jacki-o) has been spotlighted for wrong-doing (and dumped as a judge on “australian idol").. whilst he needs to (somehow?) take responsibility for his actions, so does the censoring and marketing of his (and jackie-o’s) radio-show..

maybe this girl looked up to the radio hosts? somewhere where she thought/was comfortable to share what happened to her, except, it was broadcasted).. if kyle and jackie-o saw the conversation as heading to gravely inappropriate (which it obviously has) they should have taken it off air..

why was the mum goading and encouraging her daughter? it seems her rights as a parent should be penalised too (what view does this give her daughter of what has happened to her if she felt coerced to talk about an ordeal such as rape on public radio?)..

comments on “aust. idol” about a contestant’s “tuck-shop lady arms” and paulini’s gold ruffle dress/weight brought out action groups and calls for his dismissal from the judging panel: most of the time he is voicing his opinions and (trying to) connect and be a voice of a target group.. in this instance of the fourteen year old girl, i dont think he was able to effectively bridge his part in this situation, and his radio audience..

Ah well lets backtrack a little bit....The person who raped this 12 year old girl is to blame.
The mother knew about it months ago and its unbelievable it was not reported...yes the girl should of already been in counselling and police involved in finding this disgusting incriminating person.
Certainly this entire program is terrible to hook anyone up to a lie detector test by people who are meant to care about them. Instead they publicly attempt to expose everything and call it entertainment.  The whole thing is messed up..

Let’s not forget the kind of ppl we’re dealing with here. It’s just like Maury Povich for the radio. People go on these shows because they don’t have the money/resources to find out what they want to find out.

Kyle & Jackie-O are complete morons for putting a 14 year old girl on a lie detector test. That’s just sheer stupidity. Kyle’s comment, to me, was out of pure shock. I don’t think he knew how to react to the girl admitting she had been raped.

The person who I am FURIOUS with in this case is her monther. Knowing her daughter has been raped and a) doing nothing about it and b) putting her on national radio asking about her sex life knowing full well this could possibly come up. This woman deserves a bullet right between the eyes.

I feel so sorry for this girl. I really hope she does get the counselling and whatever else it is that she needs to deal with what has happened to her and I hope the perpetrator is brought to justice.

The bit that got me was when the mother asked “have you ever had sex”, and the daughter replies “I’ve already told you the story of this and don’t look at me and smile because it’s not funny.”

What the hell? Asking that, then smiling and waiting for her response? She must have a mental illness

what was this girls mother thinking?  calling a radio station to out her daughter’s sexual history - if that’s not maternal jealousy working at some level, i don’t what is.  in HR terms, what she did is classed as victimisation and speaking from an employer perscpetive is an immediately sackable offense because it’s considered worse than bullying because it’s usually a public act.  i don’t see what thin red line there is between that and abuse in a parent/child situation.

talk about ratings.  nothing converts into $$’s better than attention.  you know they have producers for a reason...kyle and jackie o deliver this stuff but someone else orchestrates it, puts the wheels in motion, before anything goes to air.  people should really be out for production manager blood before they turn on the presenters.
