yeah, while admittedly I hadn’t heard a lot about this my initial response was that this may have been a seriously nutso reaction. What I’ve heard about the two profiled cases suggested that they were opportunistic crimes rather than hate ones. Not that one is better than the other. I don’t know. Whatever.
I’m keen to hear radicalman’s thoughts on this as he is ever the apologist when it comes to Australia being labelled as racist - except when it concerns south asians.
Calling me into the squared circle ey peenut? lol
I don’t believe Australia is any more racist than other countries. One should really hear what the Indians say to the Aussies in their own language at the cricket hehe.
Points to ponder on here.
* Have you noticed that of late there are quite a few people from Sub Continental backgrounds in Melbourne. Myself being a person from that area i have best friend who is lets just say MR INDIA..he loves India and basically according to him everything was invented in India..lol...but even as we go around he has been saying..bloody hell there are way too many Indians here. That’s not to say its a reason to bash them. Read beloe trying to make a point here as to possible reasons for attacks.
* We are in a bad state financially and also with unemployment rising. One possible reason could be that people are seeing that wait a min why have i not got a job, why am i redundant etc and everywhere i go there is an Indian serving me etc. Although many Indians are hard working honest individuals who study hard and work very hard part time to try and survive in Melbourne, the mentality of some people...possibly due to jealousy or lack of education think that ok why are these people of color coming to our country and taking all our work.
I am very sad about these attacks on people from Indian origin..however i believe the first few may have been random attacks..but now with the media exposure and protests in the city i dare say future attacks will be targeted. Its sad and Indian students should be aware that they may be targeted and take some measures..like for example not carrying $600 rent money with them when they are in the train etc…
In the Indian local papers i am happy that there is a organization set up to assist Indian’s with a toll free hot line number so that if they are in any way unsure about something they can ring the number or quick assistance if they are in need.
The government has a dilemma....on one hand there is a huge influx of Indian students into Melbourne...basically when u drive around Melbourne spotting a white person is harder than finding osama. But then The government knows that its the Indian students who form a large percentage of funding for the education sector. On another hand Taxi drivers are getting increasingly frustrated as i believe laws have changed to scrap 12 hour shifts for more shorter ones to accommodate for Indian students who can drive taxi’s as part time work.
But fuck all of that..we are all gods people there shouldn’t be color and race issues everyone should have equal opportunities for everything....unfortunately that is the perfect scenario...but in reality it is far from happening. But with that in mind...i don’t believe Australia is a racist country...so i don’t share my views with that Telstra Ex Boss haha.
Also i have never called Australia racist when it comes to south asian issues...cricket is a different matter hehe
