Skinny bashing is NOT cool.

Mia Freedman pretty much sums up EXACTLY how I feel on this issue. Oh Mia, I love you for writing this piece.

I don’t think any of the women who have replied to this post feel as if they’re better than anyone else. Quite the opposite. If anything they feel bullied because of their weight and are sick of being vilified for being skinny. You open up any womans magazine and I bet there will be at LEAST one letter from a reader criticising thin women.

My issue is about the pressure girls feel about their weight/figure.  The incidence of eating disorders is rising.  I understand there are those who are naturally thin, but that’s not what I’m talking about.  There is a “thinness” that I see every time I go to the mall, and its not a healthy thinness.  I believe its one that has been achieved through deprivation.  I have friends who complain that they can’t put on weight and they feel like they look like a 12yo boy - but looking at their face and their eyes, they still look healthy.  If someone has severely deprived themselves, you can see it in their face and their eyes.  I’m seeing more of it lately than I think I ever have.  Maybe I’m more sensitive to it now that I’m a mother.

Its not about the figure so much as what girls (and boys) will do to achieve it.  I have fears for my daughter - I will do as much as I can to prevent this becoming an issue for her, but there’s so much pressure from external sources, and I hate to think what it will be like in 10-15 years.

I don’t mean to make thin people feel bashed, although I probably should have taken more care with how I worded things.

Everybody is judgemental tho, if you saw a fully out there, 100kg+ teenage girl in a corset, f’me boots and mini skirt - honestly, what are you gonna think?

hindsight and experience are priceless - judgement is made when tapping into both.

if you don’t have great hindsight or experience your judgement’s going to be limited, narrow, etc.

that’s what’s being argued here anyway, we’ve gotten away from the health implications of being dangerously thin because that’s something that can’t be argued, it is what it is and any PERSON who is dangerously thin should seek medical help if it becomes too severe.

ask anyone who’s become a mother or father or anyone who’s had a serious health scare, they don’t care about image as much.  i had a decent health scare last year and if i’m honest, i was preoccupied with body image before it all went down.  now that i’m in possession of all the facts and what i need to do to stay as healthy as i can, the last thing i think about is how skinny or fat i ‘look’.  if i’m healthy i’m happy, i just wish people could come to this realisation without having to go through something so drastic.  it would be nice if more people could learn more from others mistakes than having to make them themselves.

I’m loved as I am, now that I’ve accepted that I love myself as I am.  And to be frank, now that I’m feeling that way about myself, I look better anyway.  I look so much better when I’m smiling and have that whole radiating from the inside thing going on, that I do when I’m feeling insecure and miserable…

As for learning from other people’s mistakes, HA!!  I have made enough to last THREE lifetimes!!!  Hopefully I learnt enough from them that my daughter won’t have to go through them too!
-
But if she were to be really skinny as a teen, I would worry, to be honest.
-
My instinct is pretty spot on - its taught me that over and over again.

I’m pretty good at figuring out why I’m being judgemental and what its really about.  That doesn’t mean that I always dismiss it though - sometimes it is there to serve you in some way.
