I remember having this discussion on here a few years back, but it might be fitting to re-address it?
What do you consider old school? I’m talking a club context here… cos to me old school has always been 70s - 90s. But now it seems the 2000s is starting to creep into it, and I guess this is a result of everyone getting older… What old school do you guys want to hear in an old school room at a club??
To me Ol skool ends at the end of the New jack swing era (and what a note to end on i should add).
it will be interesting to see what “ol skool” will be in the club scene in 5 years time as we speak we are seeing a slow transition, now real new jack is hard to come by in the clubs, (even if the djs want to play it) the kids dont get it.
My heart break a little more everytime i hear jagged edge or other acts from around that time being played in an ol skool room.
anything before 1995
-
todays wangs think that 112 - dance with me is old skool
-
idiots
-
u wont be hearing any real new jack in any clubs anymore bc todays crowds are useless young ppl with no education when it comes to music

ol skool to me is still stevie , luther , smokey robinson, marvin gaye, hightops, aretha , u know the true greats .. not the late ninteys -early 2000’s cmon 112 dance for me thats not ol skool thts just an older song not ol skool i remeber i seen or heard ppl defining ol skool is something thats like 20 years plus.. so the yung head out there should redefine they meanings and cop some marvin , luther etc etc and see what they are legneds.. damn no more new jack in da clubs i remember going to clubs listening to bbd, guy,etc etc .. loved it when i was growing up lol.. useless kids they dont even know biggie anymore .. they know pac but biggie they dont know .. or they dont even know btnh had hitsb4 i tried sad sad sad state of affairs lol
What would this era be called in the norty’s??? new crunk swing?? I wonder in 20 years time would we be looking back at the norty’s or still be feeling the new jack era??
It is sad stuff from 2000ish being played in an old school room, I’m guilty of it myself, but when quality new jack clears the room and Donell Jones and 112 equals a packed room till 6am… you can guess what you’re going to get pressured to play....
SHOULD DJs KEEP PUSHING NEW JACK STUFF FOR THE SAKE OF GETTING THE CROWD USED TO IT AND KEEPING THE MUSIC ALIVE? OR ARE YOU NOT INTERESTED?
And I dont mean playing just Guy, BBD and Blackstreet.....
i just play it anyway when i get a chance, however its at the start of my set.
was dropping some some aaron hall, jeff redd, keish jackson & a personal fav keith sweat’s i want her on sat night.
u gotta be careful with todays useless crowds if u wanna keep em on the dance floor
-
u gotta like play the shit they think is old skool (1998 - 2002) and then in between u drop a new jack track and back to the shit they know
-
how fucken sad is that
-
usually towards the end of my sets for 30mins i go into the new jack stuff but thats about it
well its just natural for the new age of clubbers to define old skool as 98 - 2002 because they werent in the clubs at the time these tracks were the hits. I think it should be more appropriately classified as ‘middle school’ hehe.
i hate it when young ones ie 18-20 yrs define ol skool to me as 2000-2004 ftw ?? mn im only twenty four but i no ol skool .. new jack swing era i was only 9-10ish but i know that ish .. it hepls when ur older cuzns listened to rb back when they were 18-19
middle skool lol or it shsould be called by kindergarten lol
i see it as a lack of music education and nuthin else
-
when we all grew up in the 90’s we knew wat old skool was and its still the same thing
-
i blame radio for some of it
yep its a lack of education and yes you can partly blame radio for the defitnation of ol skool i was litsening to fox fm and they played rkelly igintion and the dj sed this is so ol skoll !!! ftw ?? pfft thats way i listen to gold fm or abc at work.. now gold fm is ol skool rock and thats what it is
